The Masai Mara Game Reserve is the most visited park in Kenya due to its large game concentration. This is also the only park you are guaranteed to see the big five (lion, rhino, elephant, leopard and the buffalo). Other than the big cats, you will also have a chance to watch large numbers of antelopes, gazelles, zebras and giraffes. You will see the cheetah, hyena, rabbit and various bird species. The ecosystem of the Mara reserve is unique with spectacular large open grasslands which cover an area of about 392 square kilometers. There are three permanent rivers passing through the park namely the Mara, Talek and Sand which provide adequate water for the wildlife. These rivers are also a home to many hippos and crocodiles which rely on the wildlife for their survival.
Being bordered by the Loita Hills and the Oloololo escarpment, the highlight of the Masai Mara is the great wildebeest migration from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The best time to tour this place is between the months of June and September when the migration is at its peak. During this time, there is little or no grass in the Serengeti, forcing the animals to migrate to the Masai Mara where there are enough green pastures. Watching thousands of animals cross the mighty Mara River is an unforgettable experience. Many animals especially the old, the weak and the calves drown in the water while others are killed by the hippos and the crocodiles.
During your adventure at the Masai Mara, you get to spend your nights in luxury tented camps which are located in various parts in the heart of this large reserve. From here you will get to enjoy the beautiful spectacle of the annual wildebeest migration. Whether you are a photographer, an artist or a writer, you will definitely have a private tent to meet all your requirements. Each tent has beds and bathrooms and also a dining room set on the open to allow ideal game viewing. All meals are prepared on open fire by expert chefs. The tents are hardly fenced but, Masai guards are always there to guard against dangerous animals. There are swimming pools built near the tents where you can swim and relax after a long day of game viewing.
Camping Safari in the Masai Mara will offer you a chance to view the wildebeest on a hot air balloon flight. This is a unique experience which is only available in the Mara. You can take beautiful photo shots as you watch the wildebeest from the hot air balloons. The hot air balloon flight is done early in the morning before sunrise.
